Friendship

The lives of many people are disrupted by stroke.  "Strokers" may find that their friends are still busy with work and family commitments and are unable to socialize, or the effects of the stroke may interfer with former activities.  Our club offers new opportunities for companionship and leisure pursuits.

Weekly phone calls keep people in touch with one another and provide reminders about our stroke club schedule.

Continuity of Rehabilitation Work

Often speech and language skills are affected by stroke.  Stroke survivors may have problems speaking, understanding speech, reading or writing.  The severity of the impairment can be almost indiscernible to severely disabling.  A registered speech and language pathologist provides individual and group speech maintenance classes for those with speech deficits due to stroke.

Our 45 minute exercise class focuses on range of motions and strengthening movements.  It provides a combination of chair and standing exercises suitable for most peple recovering from stroke.  Indoor bocce (a games similar to carpet bowling) provides a physical and mental challenge twice monthly.  Speakers provide current health and human interest stories to keep us motivated.

Fostering Independence and Leadership

Members are encouraged to maintain and improve physical, speech and memory skills.  There are many opportunities to assist others and take on club repsonsibilities.  Current positions inlcude:  weekly phoners, club director, treasurer, exercise instructor, bocce leaders and president.  All members are encouraged to provide program direction and leadership.
